one word is a quiet, ambient sound installation/collage that gradually unfolds into unpredictable rhythms and melodies that float across the room from speaker to speaker. It uses both found and original sounds along with live performance.
Inspired in part by environmental field recordings, the piece reflects and loosely transcribes the patterns heard on the recordings for multiple instruments. additionally, the listener is aurally disoriented, with the piece blurring the distinction between live and recorded sound.
Each performance of one word is site-specific: new recordings are created in and tailored to the individual space, and use any instruments or sounds that happen to be available. The first performance (July 2005, at the Headlands Center for the Arts in California) consisted of twelve found boom boxes, multiple turntables and live piano. (27 minutes)
