i have included some images and a sound excerpt of an installation called 'the subtle land' in the sound works pages. thanks again~

march 1, 2008|bonnie 'prince' billy's best-of 2007

here is some great but belated news: a friend just pointed me to bonnie 'prince' billy's best of 2007 list over on domino records, and i was very excited to see that *american winter* was there---the recordings on am win are mostly from kentucky, and i have often thought about many connections between old-time music and bpb's own. so, very cool, indeed.

here is the link, and many many thanks to bonnie prince billy.

slowly, happily, am win is getting some nice airtime. here is the latest, from kzsu at stanford university, california, which includes a good (play by play) review, and even a spot on this week's top 10 list.

september 12, 2007|release date announced for american winter

atavistic records will be releasing american winter next month (october 9th, to be exact). here is the site page: atavistic.com

and here are the notes from ata and also john bondurant down at berea college:

american winter = holler musics woven with archival field/radio recordings, meeting the 21st century.

The Berea College (Kentucky) Sound Archives holds non-commercial recordings documenting more than 75 years of Appalachian history and culture. In late 2005, the Berea College Appalachian Music Fellowship Program was made possible by a grant from the Anne Ray Charitable Trust, established by the late Margaret Anne Cargill. The Fellowship program supports scholarly research in Berea's collections of traditional music.

“Brian Harnetty was among the first Appalachian Music Fellows. initially overwhelmed by the collection's richness, he quickly immersed himself in field recordings, radio programs, and oral history interviews. We conversed daily about what he'd heard, the concept of tradition, and collections as a type of composition. The resulting pieces take the known, unknown, and forgotten, reworking them into new cloth and exposing new layers of humanity." -John H. Bondurant, Sound Preservation Archivist, Berea College

pleased as punch to announce that american winter will be released this fall on atavistic records, from chicago, usa. if you aren’t familiar, go check it out and see heroes from many generations and genres hanging out under the same roof. and then you’ll see why i’m pleased as punch.

hopefully, there will be some upcoming shows, parties, hooplas, hootenannies, yahtzee tournaments, and general shenanegan-doins. but for now, the release is this october, and how.

here’s the site: atavistic.com

plus, an update to the sound works page: a taste of the latest piece–– called "the tiny glass"––has been added. hope you like.

april 19, 2007|couple–a–gigs, kentucky residency link

a quick heads-up of two shows: one is tomorrow night (4/20), at the horn gallery on the campus of kenyon college. two is in june (6/2), opening for moviola's "dead knowledge" cd release party at used kids records in columbus, o.

i think they are both free, too. so there.

other news: the march residency in eastern kentucky was very successful, engaging, inspiring. pics/audio soon, but for now a youtube (gasp) link here.

February 7, 2007|updated site @ makeando
Finally, after many months of inactivity, I’ve been able to make a few adjustments and changes and additions at makeando.org (see link above), beginning with yet another project that has spun off of a residency at the berea college Appalachian sound archives. it is something like a wonder-cabinet and jukebox put together, of a range of recordings from the archive.

Misc. other: with the fossil fools collective, I’ll be heading back down to south-eastern Kentucky in march; this time, to work with sociology students, creating audio-collage pieces from interview of coalminers and veterans. there will be additional performances, workshops, etc. in the heart of coal mining territory during the week of march 11–17.

That’s the news, and how.

October 24, 2006|48 hours of making art
Just finished an inspiring weekend with 23 other artists. Called “48 hours of making art,” it was held at lake erie college in Painesville, just north of Cleveland, ohio. my own contribution was a sound piece that used hand-crank cassette players, field recordings, folk songs, and spirituals. For more information, see the sound works page. It was a concentrated, charged weekend, and my friend Nathaniel parsons (also participating, making on-land boat rides with the family canoe) was key in providing dialogue, feedback, thought, insight, and revelation. So there.

here is his site:
http://www.ihavebeento.com/

thanks to lyz bly, her mother (for providing great meals), and all of the other artists participating, and the teenage punk-ska-bagpipe band playing at all hours. The opening reception is at the b.k. smith gallery on Friday, October 27, from 7pm-10pm. If you are in the area, visit it. go on, visit.

September 18, 2006|upcoming events, added work
A couple of events in October: first, the fossil fools will be traveling back down to Athens, ohio, to be a part of a sustainability festival called “ohio unplugged” on October 9. plus, also: I will be participating in "48 Hours of Making Art (Redux)" at the B.K. Smith Gallery at Lake Erie College on the weekend of October 20, 21, and 22, 2006. there will be 20 artists working throughout the weekend (including fellow fossil fooler njp, yes!), and I am honored and excited to be a part of it.

finally, I’ve added text, track titles, and samples of the latest work, called ‘american winter.’ An upcoming release date is t.b.a. check it out in the sound works pages.

August 9, 2006|late-summer Update
Pictures and a sound clip have been added from the ingenuity festival in Cleveland. If you would like to see more, visit the fossil fools website. Many thanks to all who braved the extreme weather and late start time; the audience truly made it an inspired experience.

Also, work on a berea-related project called “American winter” is in its final stages. The piece incorporates field recordings, interviews, radio broadcasts, and live instruments. More news on a release date and sample mp3s coming soon.

July 11, 2006|updated site and ingenuity festival
This upcoming weekend (july 14-15) the fossil fools collective will be in Cleveland, ohio, participating in the ingenuity festival. I will be performing in the evening on Friday (ca. 9-10 pm). During both days we will be stationed with Nathaniel parson’s teardrop camper (named chuck), dishing up solar food, and presenting solar-powered video installations, among other energy-related activities. Check it out!

Also, I’ve added a few more images and audio clips related to several recent projects and performances in Athens, iowa, nyc, and kentucky. That’s the news.

June 13, 2006|iowa, Cleveland, new york, berea archives
Several projects have been popping all at the same time. First, many thanks to Darrell and david at the university of northern iowa gallery of art for their tremendous insight and support. Our show and performances went up easily and without a hitch. The gallery looks (and sounds) amazing.

Second, the fossil fools collective will be performing and lounging at the Cleveland ingenuity festival on july 14-15. it will include sets from Kristen baumlier and myself, video by tom hansell, and sculpture by Nathaniel parsons. We will also be making “solar” food with local organic produce. check it out if you are near.

Third, I will be providing sound installation and design for bradley
mccallum and Jacqueline Tarry, two video artists that are part of an exhibit on slavery and art at the ny historical society, starting june 15.

Lastly, the berea college sound archive has put up information, writings, and sound excerpts of their Appalachian music fellowship program. If you would like to see what I was up to there, or are interested in learning more about some of the amazing people I was able to work with, look and listen away.

may 12, 2006|end of berea residency, live performances
many thanks to the archivists and staff of berea college in Kentucky.  After spending a month there working in and listening to recordings from the Appalachian sound archives, I now have more than enough material (both physical and mental) to complete a long-time-in-the-works sound project called american winter. It will consist of field recordings, radio broadcasts, and live instruments, showcasing many recordings of the folk music from Berea. More news to follow.

Also, I was recently able to perform as part of the Athens international film festival at the stuart’s opera house in Nelsonville, ohio. several recordings from the berea archives were used in my performance, including interviews of miners from the maggard mines in Kentucky and a haunting recording of “conversations with death” sung by berzilla wallin. this was a fantastic experience, and I was happy to be a part of such a conscientious and engaging festival.

Plus, also: next month I will be performing with the fossil fools art collective at the university of northern iowa (Tuesday, june 6), as part of our month-long exhibition of energy-activist art and sound. the exhibit will include video installations, art, and sound installations, with fellow artists Kristen baumlier, tom hansell, and nathaniel parsons. If you happen to be in the area, please do check it out.

okay, that’s all for now.

March 31, 2006|berea, kentucky
Two projects are unfolding while here at the Berea College Sound Archives.

some initial notes: There is so much material here, so much to listen to and explore––field recordings, festivals, radio programs, sounds of coal mines and miners, line-out singing, etc.––it is overwhelming.

Listening to hymns being “lined-out” drove me to tears (it sounds silly, i know). raw, honest, melismatic, embellished by the whole group of singers. The sound of individual voices finding their way in a melody together without fear, shame or shyness made me feel humble and woefully inadequate as a musician (but inspired, too).

the projects: Both pieces are a filter of the archives in a way, presenting these old tunes and recordings in a new context. The first will use fragments of melody to make new songs filled with memory, where each phrase has its own genealogy, geography, history.

The second is a curio cabinet of sounds, focusing on the overlooked and in-between fragments of field recordings, from the tuning of an instrument to the spitting of tobacco. Fantastic stuff.

march 22, 2006|make and do
the make and do website has been officially launched. a project originally created with a record label in mind, it will (hopefully) expand beyond, including contributions of words, objects, art, etc. or whatever we can get our grimy hands on. it offers handmade, limited run editions of works, starting with a collage cd made with (among other things) subliminal self-help tapes. if that doesn't get you excited, i don't know what will.

portland trip: no show (okay by me), but was able to do some field recording, slinking about the city with a lavalier mic.

upcoming: april 1 radio broadcast on wmmt in whitesburg, kentucky (part of appalshop), with friends/collaborators (under the collective name: fossil fools). we’ll be talking about oil, coal, art, and passing gas.

February 15, 2006|updated site
the website has been updated. there are several new things, including quicktime slide shows, additional mp3s, and new/developed descriptions of works.

other news: please check out the|tell-all records series called “twelve”| at their website. I have contributed a piece, and the others are excellent, more than worth a listen and a buy. also, I will be traveling to portland, oregon next month to perform. date and time tba.

plus: next month i will be traveling to berea college in kentucky to do work in their outstanding|appalachian folk music archives|. this is a great honor, not to mention amazingly generous on their part. time spent there is going toward an ongoing large-scale project called "american winter" that combines old recordings with live instruments.

finally, the link to "make and do" is a new site, not yet published, focused on offering limited run editions of works. so you can't get there. don't try.
